I’ve just had my best quarter in business to date, and I’m intentionally hitting the brakes.

Here’s why:

I am a lion, not a cow.

A cow grazes consistently, eating only what it needs each day and coming back for more the next day. It expends medium energy at a relatively consistent pace, and is rewarded by experiencing reliability in its daily routine and a low-stress lifestyle. Sounds kind of nice, right?

A lion, on the other hand, stays quiet and rests as it prepares for its next meal, a feast that will sustain it through the next resting period. A lion expends a lot of energy over a short period of time, reaping massive rewards all at once. Also sounds pretty good, right?

Both of these animals have figured out how to survive in a way that works for them.

In running my business, I’ve tried to be both a cow and a lion at the same time. I’ve tried to go full sprint ahead for months on end and then “rest” by working on a different high intensity project, only to jump right back into a full sprint. But it just doesn’t work.

I love the adrenaline rush of the sprint, but just like a lion, I’ve learned that I need to build in time to recharge in order to have a sustainable business.

So now, after months of sprinting, I am not stopping, but I am honoring my need for rest. I am working on house projects, spending more time outside, and doing some deep business development and strategy work that will move the needle forward down the road.

In between running a business and chasing toddlers

Still riding a high after an amazing turnout at @dorchfest this weekend. Thousands of people came to listen to over 40 bands at 24 stages, connect with friends, and enjoy the sunshine in the historic Ashmont Adams neighborhood of Dorchester.

After attending Dorchfest in its inaugural year, I completely fell in love with the festival. I love seeing all the awesome Boston-based musical acts that come to perform. I love how the porch hosts take pride in their homes, their gardens, their community. I love the energy that it brings to the neighborhood. I love that it can be enjoyed by all ages, with multiple generations celebrating together (reminds me of my New Orleans days). But most of all, I love how it makes Dorchester feel like family.

Last year, I volunteered to redo the website to help make Dorchfest look more polished and “official.” Next thing I knew, I had volunteered to chair the festival for year three (this year).

Through the months and months of planning, there were definitely times that I second-guessed my decision, wondering if all the late nights were really worth it. But this weekend was absolutely magical ✨.
